5 Natural Ways to Treat Cystic Acne

By Casey C.

Cystic acne is an embarrassing and often painful ordeal. Rather than just your run-of-the-mill zits that pop up from time to time and go away all on their own, zits from cystic acne are often quite severe. Cystic pimples are large, painful bumps that go deep under the skin.

They often leave scars behind as a nasty reminder of their presence. A cystic breakout can leave you feeling like your face is covered in painful, soon-to-burst volcanoes.

Prescription medication for cystic acne can be quite effective, but can also come with harsh side effects. Luckily, a natural approach can help treat or even cure your cystic acne, without all the scary side effects, and often for less money too. Here are five natural ways to treat cystic acne:

1) Apple Cider Vinegar Toner

Instead of using a harsh toner from the drug store full of unpronounceable ingredients, try making your own from apple cider vinegar. Apple cider vinegar has natural anti-bacterial and ph-balancing properties, meaning it kills the bacteria on your face that can lead to cystic acne, but in a way that leaves your skin soothed and refreshed.

Best of all, apple cider vinegar toner is affordable and easy to make. Simply mix one part water with one part apple cider vinegar and apply with a cotton ball.

2) Cut out Dairy

Many cystic acne sufferers have found that cutting dairy from their diet, either completely or just cutting back as much as possible, helps dramatically clear up their skin. It's thought that the hormones present in milk and cheese can trigger cystic acne flare-ups in some people.

It's worth a try to cut dairy out of your diet for two or three weeks and see what happens. While giving up delicious cheese or ice cream may feel a bit drastic at first, your newly glowing and clear skin will soon convince you the sacrifice is worth it.

3) Calendula Oil

Calendula oil is a natural essential oil derived from flowers. It is known as a powerful natural alternative to benzoyl peroxide. Used as a spot treatment, calendula oil can clear up current cystic acne breakouts, while also reducing redness and irritation and leading to less scarring.

Diluted in a carrier oil such as grapeseed oil, it can be used to moisturize your skin and help prevent future cystic acne breakouts.

4) Honey Cleansing Method

Rather than relying on harsh, chemical-laden cleansers, try washing your face with the gentle yet effective honey cleansing method. Honey naturally fights acne-causing bacteria, while also being very gentle, even for sensitive skin. Honey cleansing can clear up acne and leave your skin feeling soft and looking clear and radiant.

Simply take a tablespoon of raw, organic honey, warm it in your hands, and smooth it over your skin using gentle circular motions. After a few minutes rinse with warm water and voila! Fresh, clean, newly acne-resistant skin.

5) Acupuncture

What can acupuncture possibly have to do with acne? Well, acupuncture is thought by its adherents to balance the overall physical system, and many acupuncture practitioners and clients find that acne breakouts are caused by physical and hormonal imbalances.

Acupuncture is often used in conjunction with Chinese herbs to help clear up your cystic acne, as well as any related problems, such as severe PMS symptoms. As with other forms of alternative medicine, acupuncture's effect on cystic acne has not been scientifically proven, but it may be worthwhile to give it a try all the same.

Conclusion

By trying one or a combination of these natural tips, you should soon have your cystic acne under control. Of course, it's always a good idea to consult with your dermatologist or holistic practitioner before trying a new skin care routine.
